Protecting Families During the Housing Crisis
At the height of the national foreclosure crisis, Shanelle passed legislation requiring mortgage companies to sit down with homeowners before foreclosing. The reform strengthened protections for homeowners and helped stabilize neighborhoods across Michigan.
She also passed and supported reforms that required mortgage loan officers to be licensed, protected renters when properties entered foreclosure, and created payment plans to help families avoid losing their homes due to property tax delinquency.
These policies protected working families during one of the most devastating housing crises in American history and reflected Shanelle’s belief that government should stand with people when they are most vulnerable.
